Media should spread awareness about mental disorders

An interesting article that most people, especially women, should read is Girl Interrupted printed in You magazine. http://bit.ly/206TUeX

Pakistanis are suffering from various forms of depression and anxiety but they seldom know what it is and so they don’t seek a treatment for this. They continue to suffer for years without even trying to find a relief. People don’t understand that they are suffering from mental disorders. Unfortunately, mental is used in a bad way which usually means insane.

The main reason for this is the lack of awareness about anything that is linked to psychology. When anyone talks about psychology people think of mental asylums and electric shocks. This is because many people have no idea that there is a lot more to explore in this field.

Also seeking any form of counselling or therapy in Pakistan is almost taboo, although they will seek the help of a herbal healer or peer.

This article touches some important things like bi-polar which is a relatively new for our society, as well as PTSD and schizophrenia among other psychiatry issues.

It is requested that  more efforts to highlight such important issues in the media are taken in Pakistan, so that people can seek the appropriate help without causing more distress to those suffering.

Women Cricket Players in Media

The media focussed on T20 world series recently held in India. Special programmes and segments were devoted to the team which completely failed to perform. The team lost to Bangladesh and India – which is the worst blow to the team’s performance.

Like in the recent past, the team played way below the level that an international cricket team should have ever performed at and created a lot of hype and anger.

Despite the worst performance the media kept the men’s team in the news.  http://bit.ly/1V6yleY

On the other hand, the female cricket team played extremely well with the honour of defeating Pakistan’s traditional rival India and moving higher on the way to the finals. Unfortunately they didn’t make it till the end. http://bit.ly/1V6ytLl

The nation realized that the female cricket team had more in it than its male counterpart when the media started giving more attention to it when the other side started slipping.

In the future, if a female team is going to play any sport the media should give it as much coverage that that viewers are informed about sports other than men’s cricket.

World Autism Awareness Day

Autism is a condition in which people have great difficulty in communicating and forming relationships and also in ‘using language and abstract concepts’. Now a lot of work is being done to spread awareness about autism; but here was a time when no one knew what this was and many children suffered due to the ignorance of their parents and people around them.

April 2 is observed as World Autism Awareness Day and on this day many efforts are made to spread awareness regarding this. However, there is still a lot of work to be done in Pakistan to spread awareness about this condition in Pakistan.

There are 350,000 children in Pakistan who have this condition and they spend their lives misunderstood and facing unnecessary hardships in their lives which with a little understanding can be overcome.

This is where the media comes in to help people understand what autism is and how can those who have it be better understood and improving their lives. Jang Group should be appreciated for highlighting the importance of this day and taking the first step towards trying to spread awareness about this in Pakistan.

It is a good step by Jang Group to making people understand this condition. I hope other media outlets will also do the same in the future.

Perks, privileges and poverty

Pakistan media is still compared to other countries. And as it is things are still evolving here. Our media – the private media came into being only a decade ago when Geo News was launched and then there was no stopping it.

Being the channel that kind of actually laid the foundation for the country’s news channels, it probably had the toughest job to do. Most media channels in Pakistan followed the rules set by Geo but unfortunately there are some areas where these channels lag behind.

One important area is that of thee salary structure. Some media outlets deprive their employees of their hard earned salaries but continue to ask for output. The employees carry on working without being paid because of the risk of losing their job. They are always working under the threat of losing their jobs and being unable to find new ones.

Due to which employees become severely indebted and still finding it hard to make ends meet. The salary they receive – sometimes after couple of months – because useless as it is consumed as the borrowed money is paid back.

Ironically, many news channels offer great packages but these are seldom of any use to the employees because they usually get paid so late that their ‘perks and privileges’ become useless.

Kohli congratulates Amir – Najam Sethi’s efforts pay off

No one could have imagined after the Lords Test fiasco that Mohammad Amir would be able to resume his cricketing career. Amir, along with Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif, was found guilty of spot-fixing by the English cricketing authorities when a UK daily exposed the whole episode with photos and videos.

Both Asif and Salman refused to admit their crime but Amir pleaded guilty before the court and helped the officials in further investigations.

After serving his term in England he returned to Pakistan with hopes to bowl again and Pakistan Cricket Board supported him and convinced the International Cricket Council to review the situation.

Najam Sethi, who was the PCB Chairman at that time, met senior officials of the ICC and chiefs of other boards to persuade them to introduce certain amendments that could enable players to rejoin cricket.

Sethi was phenomenal in making this possible despite much criticism but now Mohammad Amir is playing on the national team and performing well. Not only Indian players but others are praising the young pacer.

He still has a long career ahead and only Najam Sethi should be given the credit to have made his relaunch – so to speak – in cricket possible.

bp-fake-journalist

PSL was a great event – thank you Najam Sethi

01.jpg

PSL has helped revive cricket for Pakistan, even though the event was organised in UAE. We hope to see the next PSL in Pakistan.

The credit for organizing such a great event all goes to Najam Sethi. People have been criticizing him since the elections in 2013 but he has kept his cool and kept moving forward and as they say actions speak louder than words.

Sethi has proved that he is determined to work and he won’t let useless opinions stop him. His determination was evident when he tried to get Pak-India cricket back on track despite the attack on his hosts in India.

We should be grateful to Najam Sethi for bringing us PSL and we hope to see more such mega cricket events in the future.

Students collect funds to protect nature

Only when we are aware of the importance of preserving nature will our children do the same. Unfortunately, people are too busy in unimportant matters that bring short-term profits to really care about bigger things to protect their future.

However, children around the world may be ahead of us in protecting their future. According to the British newspaper, Independent “Children in Italy plan to crowdfund €3 million to buy an unspoilt island to keep it out of rich buyers’ hands.” http://ind.pn/1oD6jL0

Although our society as a whole is quite numb to ‘trivial’ things like protecting nature, we see small pockets of humanity still striving against all odds. Small groups, some comprising solely of students, do their part by voluntarily cleaning beaches; planting trees; preserving history.

Such deeds are appreciated by the others only when they are shown by the media, otherwise no one knows or cares about them. Even the authorities only wake up when the media gets involved, and then speedy action is taken.

Hoping to see our students take similar initiatives to like their Italian counterparts.
